Opened on August 15, 2017, the Albany Historic Carousel & Museum has become one of downtown Albany’s most distinctive attractions. This downtown favorite features 47 hand-carved animals, with more still to come. Once complete, the carousel will include 51 unique creatures, from horses to imaginative animals, plus two chariots and seasonal alternates.
Each animal is sponsored and designed with help from local residents, giving the carousel a personality all its own. Figures begin as blocks of basswood shaped by newer carvers, then refined by master carvers who bring out the muscle tone, expression, and movement. In the paint shop, each carving receives about eight coats of paint over 18 months, then cures for months before a protective finish is added. The result is a menagerie filled with character.
Vincent, a black stallion inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night, features painted stars in his mane and tail, plus an artist’s palette and brushes attached to his turquoise saddle. Geno the orca is another standout, leaping through the middle row with sea life along his side and a brown otter tucked into the saddle area. Visitors can ride for $2, then head downstairs to the museum and carving studio to see how Albany’s most whimsical landmark continues to take shape.
